So I’ve been researching and trying to build my wardrobe with fashion “essentials”. Here’s a list of items usually listed in top 10 lists.

1. Trench Coat
2. LBD
3. Classic White Shirt
4. Jeans
5. Blazer
6. Skirt
7. Sunglasses
8. Flats
9. High Heels
10. Cardigan

-Do you more or less agree with this list?
-What’s in your own personal top 5 or 10 personal wardrobe essentials (what do you find using the most)?
-And do you put down serious cash for these essentials or do you buy whatever works?

That sounds pretty classic, and definitely a good starting point. Personally, I hate button-down shirts (possibly because I have yet to find one that fits), I can’t wear sunglasses (uneven ears = lopsided glasses), and I’m currently in a pants-shunning phase, so no jeans either.

This is my top 10 (not necessarily in this order)

1. LBD
2. Black pencil skirt
3. Pumps
4. Trench or wool coat
5. Leather boots
6. Black cardigan
7. Camisoles (white and black)
8. V-neck tees (white and black)
9. Opaque black tights
10. Black handbag

My style tends towards black basics with a pop of color somewhere.

I am willing to spend more (err, for me that means $50-$100) on good shoes, and my wool coat is probably the most expensive item I own. Good-quality tights are important, too – buying cheap ones that are pretty much sheer and rip after one or two wears is false economy.
Other than that, I buy “whatever works.”

Anli, thanks for the input! I like the opaque black tights and boots, those are definitely things that would be on my essentials as well! I know what you mean about the quality of tights. I tend to buy my tights and leggings at Target but have been thinking about finding more durable ones since I’ve gone through a couple already.

When I buy Target tights I size up so they won’t be so sheer.
Hue’s my favorite brand – not too expensive ($12.50 each, or 2 for $20) and pretty opaque and durable as far as tights go. I think I’m developing a tights/socks addiction.

I’ve never listened to “ten must have” lists because they don’t apply to my lifestyle. I think these lists were created as a basic building block wardrobe so people will have something handy for any occasion, which is useful, but a bit too “uniform” for my taste. It’s about looking at what you do on a regular basis, knowing what looks good on your body type and wearing things that are appropriate for that.

That being said I can’t live without (Canadian Winter version)
-Tights (Black Opaque, Grey Opaque, Very fine 40 den sheer black tights) and thigh high cotton knit black socks
-Coats (Fur Collared Vintage “dress” coat, down jacket, casual military inspired coat)
-Basic black knee high boots, preferably vintage riding boots.
-Lace up ankle boots, flat
-Various good quality loose button ups, either men’s or sheer silk blouses.
-American Apparel tube dresses for layering
-Large plain cashmere scarf
-Large good quality leather bag
-Nice well-fitting underwear.
-Elbow length leather gloves

So that might be more than ten..oops

I splurge on tights and underwear, Most of my stuff is vintage but I try to look for very simple well crafted pieces that will last rather than polyester dresses and stuff.

Thanks for the input slickrick. I love hearing what’s on other people’s essential list. You’re right, the basic building blocks for a person’s wardrobe is going to vary depending on the person. I’m actually looking at the list I posted and realized I do have most of the things, but my wardrobe still doesn’t feel very strong. I’m still in the process of defining what works best for me.

I tried making my own list of essentials, but it just ended up being a list of things I like… what it really comes down to for me is good black tights, t-shirts, and black leather boots, just because those are the things I wear on most days with almost any outfit.

To answer your question re: cost, I did spend quite a bit on the boots, but I’ve had the same pair for almost 2 years now and they’re still in great shape. I try not to spend too much on tights or t-shirts because I end up having to replace them more often than anything else in my wardrobe.

My top ten essentials :
(in no particular order)

1. Frame bag
2. Black pumps
3. LBD
4. Trenchcoat
5. Sunglasses
6. A pair of flats
7. Black tights
8. Button-down collared shirt
9. Statement accessory
10. A pair of jeans

I usually splurge in items that can last, like bags and jeans because I believe that quality comes before quantity. Others I skimp on, like tights. :)

in a practical world the essential ten are as follows:

1. that damn LITTLE BLACK DRESS - fitted, can be dressed up or down, but is “special”
2. the everyday heel - neutral color to go with everything. Also, sensible height but HONEY BEAUTY IS PAIN. The higher the better!
3. Black blazer - fitted and tailored if possible. Fun twist for the office = THE BOYFRIEND BLAZER!
4. The perfect denim jeans - JEANS THAT ACTUALLY FIT YOU!No muffin tops, no hanging bellies, no “booty crack” rise. You may think these jeans are difficult to find, and the PERFECT JEAN is difficult to find, but don’t give up the search. Also, the cut of your jeans matters! This may come off harsh but SKINNY JEANS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE! Skinny jeans that fit well and look flattering depend on height and build.
5. Trench - but be conscious of length, for those that are already short the coat may cut you down even shorter in size.
6. cardigans
7. White button up - Perfect to dress up and dress down. Watch the styling. Paired and accessorized along with spandex/polyester black slack, you may end up looking like a waiter at the Olive Garden.
8. opaque black stockings/tights - best friends in the fall and winter. Great for that dress that isn’t complete because of the weather, or the trouser short that you want to pair with a boot.
9. skirt – can be dressed up or dressed down. Similarly, to the PERFECT JEANS, CUT MATTERS! Not everyone looks flattering in a pencil skirt. Sometimes the A-LINE is more appropriate. Depending on height and build, selecting the right cut can be the difference in making yourself look like a swollen pear or someone sophisticated and well put together.
10. quality black purse - can be used everyday, helps but doesn’t necessarily have to pull the outfit together

THESE ARE MY SUGGESTIONS FOR A PRACTICAL WORLD. IN ALL REALNESS - FORGET THE RULES

A FIERCE ATTITUDE IS ALL THAT MATTERS!

If I could only own one outfit, I would choose a cozy cami, an oversized cotton tee, chic flats, a scarf, a bold piece of jewelry and leggings.
